10 gigs in Birmingham this June for less than a tenner

Whilst some people may be living it up at the big summer festivals in Europe, things couldn’t be better than right here in Birmingham. A whole host of top class acts, all on your doorstep and for less than some duty free snacks.

Not hitting up the monthly free psych night Kaleidoscope should be seen as some sort of musical heresy, and with a bill making up of part glam, part psychedelic outfit Cave Girl, ethereal indie Kinds of Light and the now-with-new-line-up Handwaxx. Plus, DJs and an arts market featuring more of Birmingham’s booming talent.

MeMe Detroit + The Butters Aliens + Sofa King

Who: Gritty, rocky grunge for a political cause
When: 7th June
Where: Hare and Hounds

Birmingham’s rock and roller and Bowie inspired MeMe Detroit, grungy The Butters Aliens and alternative experimentalists Sofa King are all joining forces to fundraise for Not Normal, Not Ok, a campaign group much needed in Birmingham, who are working with West Midlands Police to end sexual violence in music venues. 100% of ticket sales will go towards funding the cause.

Flamingo Flame + The Groove Exchange 

Who: Neon, 80s inspired glam rockers celebrating the life of Prince

Birmingham’s best tribute to the late, and always great Prince is back with more glam, 80s and more. Flamingo Flame are Birmingham’s answer to neon 80s pop, with spacious melodies that don’t fall into the realm of pastiche. They’re joined by the soulful The Groove Exchange, Jody & Danny plus Rich Priest and Sobab Oppail, as well as DJs all night.

Hannah Brown + Bryony Williams + The Northern Riots + Watermark

Who: Sweet, yet soulful local music

Hannah Brown moves from Nottingham to the West Midlands to pursue her musical career, releasing home grown demos and persistently giving Birmingham her soulful melodies. Support comes from dreamy, hook laden indie soloist Bryony Williams, The Northern Riots and Watermark.

Swampmeat Family Band + Independent Country

Who: Country punk veterans of Birmingham music

In between fundraising for a road trip to SXSW, trash country punks Swampmeat Family Band celebrate the raw, raucousness and righteousness of rock and roll. Join the Southern inspired outfit along with independent country and DJs all night for an unforgettable (and free) Friday hoedown.

West Midlands based collective Die Das Der are back with another full bill of local, left of the dial music. The brand of musicians, designers, journalists and more are presenting the incredible space pop five piece Hoopla Blue, alongside off-kilter synth pop Odmansbox and experimentalists Health and Efficiency.

Hailing from the capital, Gaygirl are a tight dynamic quartet that fill any room with alt-grunge noise, dripping in shoegaze undertones that have got them on support slots with the likes of Shame and Sorry.
