Review: PVRIS return to Birmingham on headline tour

  • PVRIS returned to Birmingham after their April tour last year
  • The band played the O2 Academy on 23rd November
  • Support came from Coin and Tyne

Opening the stage, of the main room at the O2 Academy, was 19 year old pop artist Tyne. After gaining popularity through BBC Introducing, the singer has managed to turn a few heads and that didn’t end with this crowd. Despite the audience not knowing her music, it didn’t stop them dancing around to her chill-pop vibes. Latest single ‘Girly’ was the highlight of the set, its catchy chorus creating some movement throughout the room.

Following Tyne, with a similar but quirkier style were American indie rockers Coin. The four piece, from Tennessee, definitely kept the welcome atmosphere in the room flowing with their dancing and catchy songs. Despite the rhythm section overpowering the vocals on occasion, Chase Lawrence delivered his lyrics flawlessly. Considering it was their first visit to Birmingham, the band clearly wanted to impress and they more than succeeded; their sense of style paired with their melodic guitar riffs was by far enough to get heads turning.

All it took was for the lights to descend for the crowd to be screaming for headliners, PVRIS. Although they only had a short setlist, the band managed to cram it full of crowd favourites from both of their studio albums. Opening with ‘Heaven’, Lynn Gunn’s radiant voice echoed through the room, joined by the somewhat haunting sound of fans reciting each lyric.

Throughout the set, Gunn’s vocals did begin to falter as she misplaced certain lyrics and sometimes exposed the samples, however this was easily made up for with plenty of crowd interaction and on stage dancing. Amongst the setlist were popular songs ‘St. Patrick’, ‘Holy’ and ‘You & I’, which more than made up for any downfalls of the evening. Closing with ‘No Mercy’, their only encore song, PVRIS got the room moving one last time before saying their thank yous after a very successful evening.
