Arch hip-hop slackers Cypress Hill are set to dust off the cobwebs and head out on the road with their inimitable West Coast rap for the first time in two years. This comes on the downbeat of their first new album in nearly a decade, the sensibly named Elephants on Acid. Twenty one tracks of pristine beats and rhymes from the Californian legends that effortlessly mines familiar ground of bong-happy tunes and powerhouse raps produced by long time member DJ Muggs. It’s a powerful high that sticks to the “If it ain’t broke dont fix it” philosophy of music, and when the sounds are this good, why change it?
It’s been a busy year of touring for the band, whose first four albums are revered classics of experimental hardcore hip-hop. Fans can relax and Throw Their Sets in the Air as the rappers, now entering a third decade at the top of their game, plough through a seductive mix of new material and classics including ‘When the Shit Goes Down’, ‘Hand On the Pump’ and the scorchingly unforgettable ‘Insane in the Brain’. Hardcore chilling has never sounded so good. Come on now kids, just toss that ham in the fryin’ pan.
