EP review: Lions of Dissent – Lions of Dissent
The artwork on this EP is stunning, a really simple yet striking colourful design. It’s no wonder then that Wolverhampton band, Lions of Dissent have not only played gigs, but also held their own art exhibitions showcasing the work of Sister Minor, the designer behind all of their artwork.
The first song ‘Dazed (But Unfazed)’ has a spaced out atmospheric feel with an indie edge. Familiar ‘Woo Woos’ can be heard throughout, a nod to the Rolling Stones song ‘Sympathy for the Devil’. The song itself sounds more like Spiritualized, and the trippier side of bands like Primal Scream, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Kasabian. A truly wonderful kaleidoscope of sound.
Next up is ‘9: Lives’, which has more of a driving riff, a wall of sound effect and vitriolic vocals. This is the kind of song you can imagine being blasted from a festival stage with flood lights flashing and people hiked up on their friends’ shoulders shaking their fists in the air.
Closing song ‘Dust’ initially has a more 80s vibe to it, with some effects that sound straight off your old Commodore 64. Twanging guitars, echoing vocals and spaced out electronic noises make for a multi-layered aural delight.
Overall a passionate mix of tracks definitely worth checking out.
