Single review: Tom Forbes – Turpentine
Turpentine, the latest release from Evesham singer-songwriter Tom Forbes is a fusion of funk, electro, rock and pop that signals a definite evolution in style and substance. Taking influence from both Prince and Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, specifically his “Daffodils” collaboration with Mark Ronson, Forbes pitches pop vocals with funky bass lines to produce a song that struts and shakes. A wiry guitar gives the track enough of an edge to prevent too much of a gloss, whilst its easily choreographed nature – in a Daft Punk meets Pop kind of way – is offset by enough going on to suggest something fluid and free. The funk and freedom has always been part of Forbes’ style, but his latest release has made them more of a solvent affair.
Turpentine is released on August 22nd.
