Review: Sun Club’s flawless set resonates with Sunflower Lounge crowd

  • Sun Club embarked on a headline UK tour following a stint across Europe with Hinds
  • Baltimore quintet provide an energetic performance on Saturday January 30th 2016
  • Support on the night came from Callum Pickard & The Third Look

Having just toured across Europe with Hinds, Sun Club are remarkably hot property. Embarking on a headline tour of the UK, The Sunflower Lounge is first to play host to the dynamic whirlwinds.

Placing melody at the forefront of what they do, opening act Callum Pickard & The Third Look have an effortless charm and grace. Dancing rhythms and twirling refrains fill the room with an air of elegance. Classic compositions crafted from brightened guitar riffs echo with a well-honed flair. It’s spritely, and it’s enchanting, but ultimately without spark.

Sun Club‘s performance is fuelled by fire. Powered by a seemingly ceaseless energy, the Baltimore five-piece move and shake their way through a set that barely pauses for a moment. Half new material, half favourites from last year’s debut album ‘The Dongo Durango’, the show flows seamlessly from one song to the next. With an air of the lost boys breaking free, the quintet lead the room through anthemic hollers and cries into a world of their own making. Slating the rules and trashing standard formats, the songs bleed into one and other with an endless drive.

There’s an intensity and a spirit that can’t be rivalled in the music Sun Club create. Wild and tumultuous, the band’s performance is a half hour romp searing with a reckless abandon. Blazing with intensity and chaos, the five-piece let the music do all the talking, until, tumbling exhausted off the stage, their time is spent. Bringing a short stay of liberation, disarray, and resounding melodies to light, you won’t find a band better.
