Charlie Bennett Unveils New EP “Sweetie” via Young Poet (6th September 2024)
Birmingham’s very own Charlie Bennett, a 23-year-old indie/bedroom-pop artist, has just released his latest EP, “Sweetie,” through the esteemed London-based indie label YOUNG POET. Known for his refreshing sound that blends indie vibes with bedroom pop aesthetics, Charlie Bennett continues to solidify his place in the music world with this new collection of tracks.
Bennett, inspired by artists like Dayglow, Beabadoobee, and Oscar Lang, began his musical journey in late 2020. The pandemic lockdowns provided him the time and space to teach himself how to record and produce music from the comfort of his bedroom. This DIY approach led him to embrace the bedroom pop genre, where creativity and resourcefulness are prized over traditional methods. As Bennett puts it, the genre’s “inclusive, anti-gatekeeping attitude” drew him in, allowing him to craft music using whatever instruments and tools he had at his disposal.
“Sweetie” is a testament to Bennett’s evolving artistry. He describes the EP as a “complete pick n mix of sounds,” aiming to create a versatile project that can be enjoyed in various settings. “I wanted to create something that could be listened to in multiple contexts, to fit a variety of moods,” Bennett explains. He adds that he judges his songs by how well they would fit into the soundtracks of films like Juno and 10 Things I Hate About You. The EP’s title, “Sweetie,” reflects its eclectic nature, much like a confectionery assortment.
One of the standout tracks on the EP is the new single, “Tea For Two.” Bennett wrote this song after an extended period away from home while on tour. “I wanted to write something homely, soft, and soundtrack-esque,” he shares, aiming to capture the warmth and comfort of home in the melody. The song also features a catchy “da da da” refrain, designed to resonate well in a live setting. Interestingly, Bennett wrote “Tea For Two” in just 30 minutes during an Instagram livestream, capturing a moment of creative spontaneity. He later collaborated with producer Jack Hardman (known for his work with Luke Sital Singh, Lexie Caroll, and Sunflower Thieves) to bring the track to life. The recording process was organic and unpolished, with the guitar recorded on the stairs of Hardman’s house and the vocals captured in a single take.
Charlie Bennett’s music has clearly struck a chord with listeners, as evidenced by his rapidly growing fanbase. With over 500,000 dedicated followers, his community, affectionately known as the “Strawbennetts,” has streamed his music more than 12.5 million times. Bennett’s rise to prominence has been marked by features on Spotify’s New Music Friday UK, Our Generation, and Fresh Finds UK & IE playlists, as well as adds to Apple’s New in Alternative and Alt Pop playlists. His growing popularity has also earned him a support slot on Will Joseph Cook’s recent UK tour and airplay on BBC Radio 6 Music, BBC Introducing, and KCRW. The attention from major label executives further underscores his potential, with Bennett humorously recalling a Zoom meeting with one such executive while folding his socks.
The release of “Sweetie” on 6th September 2024 marks another significant milestone in Charlie Bennett’s career.
