Wrestlemania – The Greatest Matches
Wrestlemania has to be by far the most exciting event in the wrestling industry, well it is for meanyway and always has been.WrestleMania has been body-slamming its way into our hearts since 1985, and in that time,we’ve witnessed hundreds of intense matches. Some legendary, some laughable, and a fewthat should probably be classified as crimes against wrestling. WWE’s biggest annual event has given us everything from epic title fights to celebrity cameos
that range from surprisingly competent to “why is this happening?” Today, however, we focus on the absolute best WrestleMania matches ever. (In our opinion) But before we get to the suplex-filled spectacle, I have to announce that we will not be putting interrible celebrity matches, although some have been great, it just cannot happen. So, without further ado as I sit here watching Sting vs. Triple H at Wrestlemania 31, here are our top WrestleMania matches of all time! Full of drama, destruction, and at least one man getting speared out of mid-air.
- Bret Hart vs. Roddy Piper (WrestleMania VIII)
WrestleMania VIII was a long, slow slog, but thank Hulkamania for two incredible matchessaving it from complete disaster. One of those was Bret Hart vs. Rowdy Roddy Piper for the Intercontinental Championship, an old-school face-vs-face showdown that gave us a clinic in storytelling and also doubled as a masterclass in “how to pass the torch without looking weak.” Piper, the guy who never lost clean, actually contemplated cheatin, but in the end, he chose dignity over dastardly deeds. And in doing so, he solidified Bret Hart as the future of WWE while making us all slightly emotional in the process.
- Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar vs. Seth Rollins (WrestleMania XXXI)
WWE wanted us to fall in love with Roman Reigns, but at the time, the fans were about as interested as a cat is in bath time. Brock Lesnar was too dominant, Roman was too “manufactured,” and things looked bleak—until Seth Rollins pulled off the heist of the century.
Rollins’ Money in the Bank cash-in mid-match turned this from a predictable snoozefest into one of the most exciting main events ever. It saved Roman from a crushing (and very unpopular)
win, kept Lesnar looking monstrous, and launched Rollins into the stratosphere as WWE’s ultimate opportunist. 10/10 chaos and this is one I would rewatch, I may add it to the list…8. Bianca Belair vs. Sasha Banks (WrestleMania 37) A historic main event that delivered big time. The chemistry, the athleticism, and that final hair whip made this one unforgettable. Unfortunately, this match will never happen again, with Sasha Banks now in AEW as Mercedes Mone, it will not happen. Breaks my heart but Bianca has found plenty of new opponents to whip her hair at in the meantime.
- John Cena vs. The Fiend (WrestleMania 36)
2020 was a weird year, and so was this match. Instead of a traditional contest, we got a full-blown psychological meltdown wrapped in a wrestling match. John Cena entered what can only be described as a nightmare-fueled funhouse, where he was tormented by past versions of himself, a creepy Vince McMahon puppet, and Bray Wyatt’s unhinged imagination. Was it a match? Was it a fever dream? Who care, it was amazing.
- Gunther vs. Drew McIntyre vs. Sheamus (WrestleMania 39)
Some matches have a story. Some matches have drama. This match just had three big dudes beating the living hell out of each other. Gunther, Drew, and Sheamus took “snug” wrestling to new levels, chopping, slamming, and battering each other with the kind of force that makes you wince even in replay. McIntyre even threw in a lucha flip, because apparently, big guys can fly now. The audience gave them a standing ovation, and honestly, so should we.
- Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat (WrestleMania III)
Back when WrestleManias were 90% slow-motion grappling, Savage and Steamboat delivered a high-speed masterpiece. Their match was filled with near-falls, counters, and more energy than a double espresso. Even 40 years later, this remains one of the best wrestling matches ever, proving that Randy Savage was light-years ahead of his time and that Ricky Steamboat was the human embodiment of perfection.4. Shawn Michaels vs. Ric Flair (WrestleMania XXIV) “I’m sorry, I love you.” That single sentence turned an already incredible match into an emotional gut punch. Flair was way past his prime, but HBK carried him to a farewell fight that had us ugly-crying into our nachos. It should have been Flair’s perfect sendoff… but then he kept wrestling elsewhere and tarnished the whole thing. But we’ll pretend this was his real goodbye.
- The Hardy Boyz vs. Edge & Christian vs. The Dudley Boyz (WrestleMania
X-Seven)
You know a match is insane when Jeff Hardy is doing daredevil stunts and still isn’t the craziest part. Tables, Ladders & Chairs II took the already wild TLC concept and cranked it to 11. Edge’s spear off a 20-foot ladder remains one of the most iconic moments in wrestling history. It was chaos, destruction, and absolute carnage, it was peak WWE.
- The Rock vs. Hollywood Hogan (WrestleMania X-8)
Hulk Hogan was supposed to be the villain. The crowd didn’t care. The Rock and Hogan read the audience perfectly, flipping the script on the fly and delivering a masterclass in crowd psychology. Sure, the match was about as fast-paced as a snail in molasses, but it felt legendary because both men played their roles to perfection.
- Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin (WrestleMania 13)
Some matches define an era. This one? It created one. In the ultimate double-turn, Austin passed out in a pool of his own blood, refusing to tap to Bret’s Sharpshooter. It was a masterpiece in storytelling and Bret became a ruthless heel, Austin became an unbreakable badass, and WWE’s Attitude Era was born. No titles. No stipulations. Just pure, unfiltered greatness. Whether you agree, disagree, this is our opinion; you can post yours below. With that being said, WrestleMania 41 is right around the corner and some huge matches have been announced.
