Single Review: Citylightz – I’m The Man

Some new music to bring you at the start of this week. I’ve been excited to get my hands on this track truth be told. Citylightz are a band I have followed for a while now and they are known for their dynamic sound and captivating performances. With a series of successful tracks, the band continues to push musical boundaries and explore new genres, earning a loyal following and critical acclaim in the UK indie music scene.

Citylightz latest track, “I’m the Man” combines soulful slow blues with ska elements, highlighting the band’s diverse musical talents and innovative sound. Citylightz are a Midlands-based band known for its eclectic mix of genres and compelling lyrical narratives. With each release, they aim to connect with audiences worldwide through their heartfelt music and relatable themes.

Song Themes

“I’m the Man” delves into self-assurance and resilience. The song’s compelling lyrics tell a story of confidence and self-reliance, encouraging listeners to embrace their strengths and ignore doubters. With a catchy chorus and a rhythm that blends blues and ska, the track is both laid-back and upbeat.

B stated “Our latest single ‘I’m the Man’ is a reflection of our journey as musicians and individuals. It’s about believing in yourself and not getting swayed by others’ doubts,” says B, the lead vocalist of Citylightz.

My Impressions

I personally loved how the song starts with a slow melody, then the lyrics pick up and the vocals start to arrive faster and start to flow off the lead vocalist B’s tongue like butter being melted on a hotplate.

The bass guitar is a massive hook for me as well (I’m a sucker for a catchy bass line), it complements the track perfectly, resting nicely behind a very catchy guitar riff and well-composed drumming. The whole track is a foot-tapper. I’ve had it stuck inside my brain for a few days now, which of course is a great thing, but it’s a good reflection on the band’s music. I feel if their music stays with you after you put your headphones away then a band is doing something right. I listen to a lot of music as you can imagine in this role and the tune still rattles around my brain in the best ways possible.

The song’s blend of slow blues and ska is made all the more powerful by its lyrical depth, the lads have been doing this for a while now, and it seems they are ageing like a fine wine. The lead vocalist delivers each line with raw intensity, supported by a smooth, rhythmic backdrop, making “I’m the Man” a must-listen for fans of innovative music.
