Birmingham Rep Announces Exciting September Line-Up with One-Night-Only Productions
This September, Birmingham Rep will feature a month of exclusive one-night-only performances in its largest venue, The House. The varied program includes a mix of opera, musical theatre, comedy, and poetry.
The season opens on Thursday, 5 September 2024, with Wild Arts presenting Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute. This English-translated, re-imagined version of the classic opera is ideal for audiences aged 5 and up, filled with theatrical magic and fantastical elements.
On Saturday, 7 September, Simmer Down Arts will stage Glory, a musical celebrating the life of gospel legend Sister Rosetta Tharpe. The production highlights her iconic 1964 concert at a disused railway station in Manchester.
Comedian Tez Ilyas will take the stage on Thursday, 12 September, with his new show After Eight. Ilyas, known for his role in Man Like Mobeen, will reflect on his recent life changes and the evolving world around him.
Poet Roger McGough will perform on Saturday, 14 September, presenting his renowned poetry. McGough’s show will explore his life through his work, from his childhood in Liverpool to his musical fame with The Scaffold.
The Door will host Declan Bennett’s Boy Out of The City, an autobiographical one-man show about navigating gay identity and personal challenges, earlier in the month.

About The Rep
Birmingham Rep is the oldest building-based theatre company in the UK and the forerunner of both the RSC and the National Theatre. The Rep has an unparalleled pioneering history and is the only producing theatre in the UK’s Second City. It has been at the forefront of theatre in the UK for over 100 years.
The Rep’s mission is to create artistically ambitious, world-class, popular theatre for everyone. The commissioning and production of new work lies at the core of The Rep’s programme and over the last 15 years, the company has produced more than 130 new plays. As well as presenting over 60 productions on its three stages every year, the theatre tours its productions nationally and internationally.
The Rep’s acclaimed learning and outreach programme is one of the largest and most diverse of any arts organisation in the country. The Rep has nurtured new talent throughout its history – from Laurence Olivier and Peter Brook to its modern-day youth theatre, and the ground-breaking Rep Foundry theatre-makers programme, it has offered opportunity and training for thousands of early career writers, directors, and artists.
Many of The Rep’s productions go on to have lives beyond Birmingham. Since 2021 Rep tours and transfers include Of Mice and Men, Idiots Assemble: Spitting Image the Musical, The Way Old Friends Do, The Play What I Wrote, Animal Farm and East is East. The theatre’s long-running production of The Snowman will celebrate its 29th anniversary as well as its 27th consecutive season at London’s Peacock Theatre when it opens on 18 November this year.
