You could quite literally describe The Strypes as an Irish boy band. But rather than being
successors to Westlife’s crown, the fact that their average age is 16 and that they throw out
rootsy rhythm and blues with consummate ease, puts them in an entirely different category, an
entirely different orbit.
Taking their cue from artists such as Howlin’ Wolf and Bo Diddley, the boys formed in 2011
and started playing R&B covers. Word spread of their emerging talent and in 2012 they toured
Ireland, adding some original songs to their covers heavy set. Unsurprisingly, it wasn’t too long
until the record companies took notice and they signed to Mercury Records at the end of the
year.
Currently on tour in Europe and the UK, some are touting them as the next Rolling Stones,
whilst others are waiting to see if they can really produce the goods. One thing is for sure, time
really is on their side!
