The Blackout + Sonic Boom Six, HMV Institute, Birmingham 23/01/13

The Blackout bound on stage to the sounds of a radio being tuned, perhaps in celebration of Radio 1’s love for their recent single ‘Start The Party’. They then proceed to kick off their part of tonight’s show with said single. Lyrically, it steers far away from their earlier material, opting for simpler lyricisms that sound a lot like the pop that is in the charts at the moment.

After a frustrating nine hour drive down from Glasgow, Admiral Fallow successfully made it on to the stage where they were greeted with a very warm welcome. The band was humbled that anyone outside of Scotland would actually spend their Monday night at their gig – it was a Monday night well spent!

From the minute headliners Band of Skulls strolled onto the stage to Wings’ ‘Live and Let Die’ and burst straight into fan-favourite, ‘Sweet-Sour’ it was evident that the Southampton threesome were intent on taking the now substantially full HMV Institute on a dirty, riff tinged cruise adorned with their grungy-blues wares.
