Sam Beam, better known as Iron & Wine, comes to the Symphony Hall on February 13th for the first show of a three-date UK tour. New album Beast Epic has a deliciously misleading title, which Beam himself admitted was chosen quite randomly. It’s a return to the stripped back musicality of his earlier work a move that has alienated some critics and fans, we love it.

The beautifully engaging Americana simmers with a gentle lilting lyricism as beguiling melodies somehow do more than just massage your senses but, in his hands, seem to caress your very psyche. It’s music possessed of great meaning that lingers long in the mind far after listening has ceased, as comforting and warm as we imagine nestling down in Beam’s mighty beard might feel. Our favourite track from an album of classic material is the jarring grace of Last Night, each melodious pluck gradually unravelling one’s sense of what it is to be human and safe.
Support comes from Half Waif, majestic pop poetry featuring Nandi Rose Plunkett of indie folk band Pinegrove.
